Filmmaker and photographer Gordon Parks has died. He was 93. Parks captured black America as a photographer for Life magazine, and then became Hollywood's first major black director. He also wrote fiction and was an accomplished composer.
As I was driving to work I was listening to the piece and was thinking how lucky we are to have recorded interviews and clips of people such as Parks. These primary sources are such great tools for ourselves and our students as we work to share the stories of others and as we work to give our students the perspective of their lives and work. The NPR site has examples of his photographs, interviews and an appreciation of his work. Might be worth throwing out the lesson plan today and sharing this life with your students...
